Beyond Slogans: Haviv Rettig Gur on History and Misinterpretation

On May 19, Kane Hall was packed as students, staff, alumni, and University of Washington leaders, including the Provost Serio, gathered for a lecture by Haviv Rettig Gur. Known as a regular contributor to The Free Press, a frequent guest on Dan Senor’s Call Me Back podcast, and the host of the popular Ask Haviv Anything podcast, Gur brought a high level of nuance to a campus conversation often dominated by oversimplification.

Gur led the audience through a detailed survey of Jewish and Zionist history to address a specific conceptual error: the application of a colonialist framework to the State of Israel. He argued that this comparison is fundamentally flawed and serves as a primary obstacle to peace. According to Gur, the strategy of attempting to "push out" Israelis as if they were foreign colonialists traps Palestinians in a broken paradigm. This mental framework, he explained, is precisely what holds the Palestinian people back from realizing their own national dreams and aspirations, as it is predicated on a historical misunderstanding rather than reality.

The lecture provided much-needed depth to the University of Washington’s understanding of a complex issue, offering a factual counterpoint to common misconceptions. The high level of engagement was evident during the Q&A and beyond; even as the building prepared to close, more than 20 students remained in line for further discussion with Gur. Staff eventually had to usher attendees out, a testament to the community’s appetite for serious, evidence-based dialogue.
